Numeracy

All the versions of this article: [English] [français]

This workshop reviews the three evolutionary stages of the theoretical approach to numeracy: the four arithmetical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), the scholastic learning of algebra and geometry, and integral calculus.

Valerie Seabright, in charge of Training at Queen’s University Belfast and Terry Maguire, Numeracy Development Coordinator in the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) lead this session. Both contributors insist on the importance of the trainer’s position as regards the three stages, in transmitting knowledge to learners.

The workshop also highlights the difficulty in finding a French equivalent to the English word “numeracy”. Both contributors underline that the feeling of stress caused by such a fearsome subject as numeracy impacts on the learner as well as on the trainer.
